Spanish school, 18th century. Virgin of Montserrat. Relief in polychrome wood. Silver crown. Dated and with legend of the concession of indulgence ("80 days"), on the back. Period frame. Lack of polychromy on the frame. Measurements: 34 x 43 x 4 cm; 56 x 65 cm (frame). Relief dedicated to La Moreneta or Virgin of Montserrat, represented in the centre of this late Baroque composition. The enthroned figure is flanked by altar boys and saints, arranged in studied symmetry. The Virgin and the figures are practically in the round, forming a semicircle, behind which stands the mountain in bas-relief. In characteristic Baroque style, the scene opens up as if it were a theatre, with two angels holding the red curtains of the curtain. The folds of the robes have been carved with painstaking attention to detail. The architecture of the abbey has also been depicted, among the pinnacles characteristic of this mountain range of such singular orography. The Moreneta or black virgin is the patron saint of Catalonia but has been worshipped since medieval times beyond its geographical borders. Legend has it that the first image of the Virgin of Montserrat was found by some shepherd children in the year 880. After seeing a light on the mountain, the children found the image inside a cave. On hearing the news, the bishop of Manresa tried to move the image to Manresa, but it was impossible to do so because the statue was too heavy. The bishop interpreted this as the Virgin s wish to remain in the place where she had been found and ordered the construction of the hermitage of Santa Maria, the origin of the present-day monastery.
