In this delicate and charming scene we see three figures inside an architectural structure. A young woman, the Virgin holds the Baby Jesus, whom she has just put to sleep to put him to bed in his cradle. This action can be seen because the Virgin removes the sheet that will cover her son during his deep sleep. The earthly father of the infant Jesus contemplates the moment, leaning on a book resting on the headboard of the cradle. The representation and model of the Holy Family has served as an image that reinforces family portraiture and the moral representation of the Christian family. The different variants that have come down to us from the history of art have been due to the political and religious needs of the time. During the 16th century in Europe, religious images and themes proliferated throughout the continent, although they were stronger in some areas than in others. In the north of the continent, especially in Holland, the 17th century saw a move away from these themes due to the interest in exploring other themes and the intention of not limiting themselves or pigeonholing themselves in any one genre, so that many artists adapted to the tastes of the people and the demands of the patrons of their territory. The artists of the time used this new branch of art to show the richness of their lands, the treatment of animals or popular scenes. It should be noted that, due to historical and political events, the Netherlands was divided into a Protestant north, dominated by the Dutch bourgeoisie, and a Catholic south in Flanders. In 18th-century Flanders there was a development of painting related to power and politics, with devotional and Catholic-related images such as this Holy Family being occasionally revived.
