Italian school of the 17th century. "Christ Carrying the Cross" or "Cristo portacroce", ca. 1670. Oil on canvas. Painting that has been restored in order to preserve its condition and conservation. The work will be available approximately 15 days after payment has been made. Measurements: 103 x 83,5 cm; 130 x 111 cm (frame). The present scene narrates one of the Gospel episodes and artistic themes of strong devotion within the Christian theme. This image of Christ carrying the Cross is part of the Passion of Christ and the Way of the Cross. The representation is centred on the figure of Christ, crowned with the crown of thorns and holding the heavy cross. He is depicted frontally and half-length, although two other figures are also shown behind him: a soldier holding the hair of the third man, who has been tied up and who will probably suffer the same fate as Christ. Perhaps he is one of the thieves, Dismas or Gestas, who were crucified with him on Mount Calvary. The facial treatment of each of them is highly expressive, depicting different states. In fact, the humanity shown in Jesus contrasts with the violent character of the soldier. The figure of Christ as the Nazarene is a traditional image whose beginnings are related to early Christian art, and is recognised as a triumphal symbol of the Redeemer over death. The interpretation of this biblical theme was worked with great drama due to the Counter-Reformation and its intention to use these images to indoctrinate and influence the minds of the faithful.
