Flemish School of the 18th century. "Landscape with animals". Oil on canvas with re-colouring. Some repainting. Measurements: 67 x 84 cm ; 83 x 100 cm (frame). In this canvas is combined the tradition of the composition and the landscape, key in the Flemish painting of the 17th century, with the presence of live animals, which give narrative sense to the scene, inside a taste for the scenographic and the realistic typical of the Baroque. In a background landscape, we see two hares in the foreground and behind them a pheasant and a partridge. In 17th-18th century compositions, live hares rarely appear in the middle of nature. They usually appear in still lifes or hunting still lifes. During the 17th century in Flanders there was a growing demand for paintings to decorate the houses of the bourgeoisie. Apart from portraits and large canvases with religious, historical or mythological themes, artists specialised, painting medium-sized works that gradually increased in size, with still lifes, animals, landscapes and genre scenes.
