24 x 18 cm; 41 x 35 cm (frame).
Italian school of the 17th century. "Terra" and "Ignis". Pair of embossed copper plates. Frame in carved wood and red marble of later date. Measurements: 24 x 18 cm; 41 x 35 cm (frame). Pair of plaques depicting, respectively, the allegory of the earth "Terra" and the allegory of fire "Ignis". The mythological treatment of each of them depicts two mythological divinities of great importance: Cybele and Jupiter. The former comes to life as the "Magna Mater" or Mother Goddess in the form of a woman dressed in a large tunic resting in the midst of a naturalistic landscape. The power and relevance given to her is reinforced by a mural crown in the form of a castle-like architecture with turrets and a large entrance, and with a sceptre. In addition, her image is conceived as that of a woman of magnanimous proportions in comparison with the representation of three small figures who are depicted working on the right-hand side. "Ignis", on the other hand, represents Fire taking shape under the figure of a naked Zeus holding thunderbolts in his hands while flying above an eagle. The divinity shows great anatomical work, as do the eagle and the treatment of the tongues of fire that emanate from the background. Each of the reliefs is baptised in the upper margin with the legend "TERRA" and "IGNIS" respectively.
