Flemish school of the 18th century. "Longines piercing the side of Christ". Oil on copper. It presents losses in the pictorial layer. Measurements: 27,5 x 21 cm; 32 x 27 cm (frame). In this oil painting on copper one of the most dramatic moments of the Crucifixion is represented, in which the soldier Longinus pierces the side of Jesus with his lance, to check that he is dead, while Jesus is crucified in the Golgotha mount together with the thieves Gestas and Dimas. At the foot of the Cross, Mary Magdalene and Mary weep at such a merciless scene. On a formal level, it should be noted that this is not a Crucifixion in the usual manner, as Christ is not depicted facing the front, but at an angle, so that his side is clearly visible. Likewise, the anatomical treatment reveals a masterly knowledge of life, both in the figure of Christ and in those of the thieves; these are suffering bodies, twisted by pain and faint, which reflect with great veracity the pathetic and painful nature of the scene, within a tremendist feeling typical of Flemish Baroque.
