Spanish School XVIII. "Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Cajetan". Painting on glass. Size: 46 x 38 cm, 54 x 46 cm (frame). Mary, standing and with an aura on her head, appears on an architectural interior with the Child in her arms, to offer this vision to a kneeling masculine personage, situated in the left zone of the composition, with a book on a lectern, and an angel accompanying him. This is Saint Cajetan, who was an Italian Catholic priest and religious reformer and co-founder of the Theatines. Saint Cajetan was born in October 1480, the son of Gaspar, lord of Thiene, and Maria Porta, a person of first rank among the nobility of the territory of Vicenza, and his mother predisposed him to piety. Cajetan studied law in Padua, obtaining his doctorate in civil and canon law at the age of 24. In 1506 he worked as a diplomat for Pope Julius II, with whom he managed to reconcile the Venetian Republic. But he was not ordained a priest until 1516. With the death of Pope Julius II in 1513, Cajetan retired from the papal court. His interests were as much, if not more, devoted to spiritual healing than to physical healing, and he joined a confraternity in Rome.
