歙石的开采约始于唐，南唐后主李煜称"澄心堂纸、李廷珪墨、龙尾砚三者为天下之冠"。至宋代达到鼎盛，恰如宋代书法家蔡君漠所赞：“玉质纯苍理致精，锋芒都尽墨无声。相如闻道还持去，肯要秦人十五城。”由此可见歙砚之价值连城。元初因砚坑崩塌而停采，直到清早期才一度恢复，故歙砚存世稀少。
此砚以歙石为材精雕而成，石材青黑莹润，石色隐绿，光滑细腻，可见鱼子纹之石品，下隐暗细罗纹。整作一尾跃出水面的鲤鱼，体态肥硕，身姿矫健，刻画精细，以鱼腹为砚堂，镌墨池于鱼鳃，设计巧妙，别出心裁。
