George Edwards Hering, British 1805-1879- Mediterranean coastal landscape; oil on panel, tondo, diameter 24.2 cm. Provenance: with Oscar and Peter Johnson, London, May 1974.; The Collection of Sir Nicholas Goodison. Exhibited: London, Oscar and Peter Johnson, ‘Continental Views by English Artists’, 1974. Note: The present work is characteristic of the oil paintings by Hering, an artist whose output frequently consisted of striking views of the Mediterranean coast, informed by his extensive travels through Italy and along the Adriatic into Greece. His paintings are defined by their vast, expansive horizons, punctuated by mountains, ruins, or, as in the present work, towering trees. Here, the pink hues of the skies suggest the coming of evening and impart the work with a romantic sense of serenity.品相报告: Held in an English gilded composition frame, circa mid-19th century with plain spandrels and tondo aperture and centres and corners in high relief. Applied tablet lower centre rail reading 'G.E.Hering'. Some rubbing to the gilded surface on the high points of the mouldings and spandrels and cracking to the mouldings here and there. Short cracks to the spandrels to the centre points at the sight edge. Outside measurements of the frame are: 45 x 45 x 5 cm. The brown paper taping on the reverse is of recent application. The panel sits well in the frame. The paint surface is stable on the support. It is subject to some slightly raised curvilinear crazing and has been cleaned and re-varnished.Under inspection with UV lamp there is a small amount of retouching in the lower sky between the foliage of the two lower trees centre right; above the buildings, centre; and in small spots in the sky centre and far left.Overall in very good condition.
