Edouard Toudouze, French 1848-1907- A wooded landscape with elegant figures promenading; oil on panel, signed 'E. Toudouze' in the stone ledge (lower centre), 41.5 x 33.5 cm. Provenance: with Leighton Fine Art, Buckinghamshire.; where purchased by the present owner. Note: The present work, peopled with figures in 18th-century dress, illustrates Toudouze’s preoccupation with historical scenes, a subject which formed a significant portion of the artist’s output. Exhibiting the influence of the artist’s Rococo predecessors, including Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) and Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806), it recalls the highly romanticised ‘fete galantes’ scenes for which these painters are best known. Despite this, Toudouze almost appears to subvert this approach, minimising the figures so they appear secondary to the expansive landscape surrounding them. 品相报告: Please refer to department for condition report
