Johannes Josephus Destree (1827-1888), A panoramic view of Scheveningen, oil on canvas, 51x75,5 cm, Provenance:-Auction, Dorotheum, Vienna, 16 October 2012, lot 42.-Private collection, the Netherlands., signed and dated `J.J. Destree. 1871.` (lower right), This atmospheric panorama was made in 1871 by Johannes Josephus Destree, a talented painter of landscapes and beach scenes from The Hague. The artist takes the high dunes as a view point and shows us the typical fisher village of Scheveningen, with the Oude Kerk, and the beach and North Sea. In the water and on the beach there are numerous Bomschuiten, which were used mainly to fish herring. Destree was the pupil of Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove (1790-1880) and Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870), two great masters of Dutch romantic art. Van Hove taught Destree to paint architecture and Schelfhout showed his pupil how to depict moody landscapes. This composition is a harmony of architecture, nature and people. The present lot is one of the chef d’oeuvres of this Hague artist.
