A Hochst porcelain group of Kinder mit Vogelneßt (Children with a Bird’s Nest) and the Flotenunterricht (Flute Lesson), circa 1785, blue wheel and incised marks, the first group with a young girl holding a bird’s nest, a boy with his arm around her, the Flute Lesson group with a boy teaching a girl to play a flute, a satchel at their feet, both standing on grassy rocky mound bases, 10.5cm high and 11.3cm high (2)Provenance: Works of Art from the Schroder Collection.Note: Other examples of the children with a nest and the flute lesson are illustrated by Kurt Roder, “Hochster Porzellan”, Mainz, 1930, pl. 83, nos. 483 and 487 respectively.Children with Bird’s nest:The boy’s right hand has old restoration (which has yellowed with time) – the hand may be original, restuck and overpainted – but it is difficult to be sure if there any replacement elements. The girl’s right hand is overpainted to the fingers – these may be original and may have been restuck and overpainted – it is difficult to be sure. Her right index finger is lacking. There is a restored chip to her left sleeve at the back of the figure, with an associated slight crack to her apron. There is a very minor chip to the edge of the mound on the left-hand side – this is extremely minor. Flute Lesson:The brim of his hat has some restored chipping (which has been overpainted to disguise it). His right hand has been broken off at the wrist and restored (the hand may be original, restuck and overpainted – but it is difficult to be sure if there any replacement elements). His left little finger is lacking. The flute has been restored (the lower part is certainly original). The majority of an element in her left hand is lacking. There are losses to the strap of the satchel. There is a very small chip to the edge of the base on the left-hand side (1mm. x 4 mm) – this is very minor. There are some slight flakes to the enamels of the edge of the base at the reverse – these are also very minor.
