Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972)'Libellula (Dragonfly)', signed lower left and 'Houtsnede Glazenmaker' lower right, March 1936, woodcut. H. 21 cm. W. 28 cm. With collector's stamp of P.W. van Doorne. Provenance: Mr. P.W. van Doorne (1896-1971). Thence by descent. Van Doorne studied law in Amsterdam, where he worked as a lawyer and public prosecutor from 1924. He was also dean of the Dutch Bar Association. Van Doorne started collecting in the 1940s and was a great collector of prints. His collection contained about 3000 prints. In 1947, Van Doorne founded an association of print amateurs with B. Kist (friend of Escher) and H.C. Molster: the Amsterdamsche Prentkring. From 1967 he was chairman of the board of the Rembrandt House. In 1970 an exhibition of his collection of 19th century French prints took place in the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam.Literature: 'Leven en werk van M.C.
