HORSE RACING INTEREST: ST. AMANT, AN EDWARDIAN ENAMEL AND DIAMOND HORSE AND JOCKEY BROOCH CIRCA 1904The old cut and rose cut diamond set galloping horse mounted with an enamelled jockey wearing blue silks and yellow hat, on a knife edge bar with rose cut diamond set 'St A' at the terminals Size/dimensions: 5cm longGross weight: 5.1 gramsSt. Amant was a thoroughbred British racehorse bred and owned by Renée Robeson's grandfather, Leopold Nathan de Rothschild (1845-1917). St. Amant only had a three year racing career, the highlight of which was his win at the 1904 Epsom Derby, being ridden by Walter Kempton Cannon. This race was run during a particularly violent thunderstorm, but the crowd's enthusiastic reception to St. Amant's win was down to Leopold de Rothschild's universal popularity. The win was widely reported in the press, and was later celebrated with a dinner at the Savoy in London. St. Amant spectacularly failed to repeat his win in following races, and he became known as 'a vicious, ill tempered brute' and 'a thorough rogue'. His final win was in 1905 when he won The Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, having started the race as an outsider. His partial rehabilitation and character improvements were attributed in part to his friendship with a cat who became his constant companion and seemed to cool his temperament. After a very disappointing racing year in 1906, St. Amant was retired and he went on to sire the champion filly Chacolet, who had a successful racing career in the 1920s in the United States.Provenance:By family descent and sold by order of a member of the de Rothschild FamilyRenée Louise Marie de Rothschild (1927-2015) was the daughter of Anthony Gustav de Rothschild and Yvonne Lydia Louise de Rothschild (née Cahen d'Anvers).
