A THANGKA OF A NYINGMA LAMA TIBET, 19TH CENTURYA THANGKA OF A NYINGMA LAMATIBET, 19TH CENTURYDistemper on cloth. Himalayan Art Resources item no. 4706 Image: 50 x 36 cm. (19 3/4 x 14 1/8 in.)西藏 十九世紀 寧瑪喇嘛唐卡Depicting a Nyingma lama cloaked in heavy robes and holding a vajra and kila, his presentation recollects the appearance of the founder of the Nyingma school, Guru Padmasambhava who sits in a halo of clouds above. His reminiscence of Guru Rinpoche evokes his incarnate role as a tertön, or revealer of dharmic treasures, who are often depicted with attributes or in the likeness of Padmasambhava. Although unidentified, his attributes are consistent with those seen in images of the Tertön Jatson Nyingpo (1585-1656), when compared with one in the collection of the Rubin Museum of Art (P2001.10.1). Here, though, the lama is represented with a second kila tucked into his belt and tall top knot fashioned with a silk ribbon. The surrounding figures, including the Nyingma World Terma protectors in the foreground, are relatives withing the hierarchy of the Nyingma tradition, for which dharmic treasures Jatson Nyingpo was said to have revealed.
