A RARE PALE GREEN JADE 'LUOHAN' BOULDER 18th/19th century (2)A RARE PALE GREEN JADE 'LUOHAN' BOULDER18th/19th centurySkilfully carved in high relief with the Luohan seated on a ledge within a deep grotto with legs crossed and two arms folding, naturalistically modelled with a balding head with serene expression in meditation, wearing flowing robes falling off the shoulder to gather at the waist, all amidst gnarled trees and jagged rockwork, box. 14cm (5 1/2in) high. (2).十八/十九世紀 青灰玉雕羅漢山子The present sculpture capitalizes on the material's inherent qualities to create a stone grotto surrounded by gnarled trees framing the Luohan who is seated in solitude in meditation. The cavernous setting has been expertly crafted to give the impression of raw naturalism that sets it apart from other jade Luohan counterparts. The Luohan depicted here may be the Eleventh Luohan, the 'Luohan deep in thought', compare with a jade Luohan boulder in the National Palace Museum and a copy of the paintings that the Qianlong emperor had seen during his visit to Hangzhou in 1757, illustrated in The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Qing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp.148-149.青玉泛灰，鏤空雕老樹虬枝生於山石之上，中間圓雕一全趺跏坐羅漢。 此山石所飾枝幹嶙峋奇古，頗有杭州聖因寺石刻十六羅漢像第十一尊者身後之枯枝風格。乾隆曾下令以此石刻拓本製作玉雕山子，可比較台北故宮博物院藏一件玉羅漢山子及拓本，見《宮廷之雅：清代仿古及畫意玉器特展圖錄》，台北，1997年，頁148及149。
