After finishing middle school in 1969 during the Cultural Revolution he was sent to work on a farm. In 1972 he was transferred to an 'inside-painting' school, and by 1975 was admitted to the Hebei Arts and Crafts School. Here he studied under Wang Xisan, see J.H.
