AN UNUSUAL MAHOGANY BOOKCASE IN THE MANNER OF WILLIAM VILE, CIRCA 1770 AND LATER200cm high, 115cm wide, 55cm deepThe bold architectural form of this bookcase combined with the execution of the carved elements is related to know works by the Royal Cabinetmaker William Vile. The Groome Court library bookcase, made by Vile for Lord Coventry in the 1760s and currently held in the V&A, incorporates carved pilasters similar to those seen on this piece (accession number W.76-1975). Another bookcase by Vile of related form, incorporating carved floral foliate swags, is held in the Royal Collection Trust (accession number RCIN 252).
