A PAIR OF GEORGE I WALNUT, PARCEL GILT AND NEEDLEWORK WALL SCONCES CIRCA 1720Each inset with pastoral gros and petit-point needlework scene, with gilt floral slip surround, single light below on leaf and mythological animal head branch each 44cm high, 25.5cm wide Provenance: Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields HouseIn style and form these bear close comparison with the Irwin Untermyer single light sconces in The Metropolitan Museum (Accession Number: 64.101.1016, .1017). Gifted by Untermyer in 1964- the sconces had previously come from the Percival Griffiths Collection. Interestingly, whilst the overall form of this lot corresponds closely to the Met pair, another pair, gifted by Untermyer in 1973 have almost identical candle backplates (Accession Number: 1974.28.65, .66).
