A GOLD LACQUER WAR-FAN SHAPED SUZURIBAKO WITH TIGER IN BAMBOO (TAKE NO TORA) Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Published: Stephen Little and Edmund J. Lewis, View of the Pinnacle: Japanese Lacquer Writing Boxes: The Lewis Collection of Suzuribako, Honolulu: University of Hawaiʻi Press, 2011, p. 51, no.23. In the form of a gunbai (war fan), the cover bisected at the center by a bamboo stem in high relief issuing bamboo leaves in low relief, with two tigers and three mon, a solid gold disk, a mother-of-pearl inlaid moon and stars mon, and a mitsudomo-e crest, all above a dense nashiji ground in sprinkled gold. The interior with mura-nashiji and hirame on a roiro-nuri ground. SIZE 25.4 x 18.2 x 6.4 cm WEIGHT 624 g Condition: Very good condition, some wear, few losses, natural age cracks, and light surface scratches. Provenance: Property from the Collection of Drs. Edmund and Julia Lewis (old collector`s label `Lewis Collection 74` to base). The overall design suggests that this suzuribako was made for the family of a high-ranking samurai. A gunbai (war fan) was used during war by military commanders to signal their troops. A war fan of similar shape, once owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the first Edo period shogun, is illustrated in Masterpieces of the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya, 1995, no. 34. The mitsudomo-e symbol is closely associated with Shinto shrines, in particular those dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and archery. Hachiman in Shinto cosmology and rituals, as for example at the Hakozaki Shrine, is repeatedly connected with the number three.
