A BLACK AND GOLD LACQUER SUZURIBAKO WITH A SHORELINE LANDSCAPE AND RED-CRESTED CRANES Japan, 19th century Of rounded rectangular form, the overhanging cover with a roiro ground finely decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and nashiji to depict an idyllic landscape with towering pine trees, craggy rockwork, dense grasses, calm waves, and wispy clouds. The interior of the cover decorated in gold, silver, red, and black takamaki-e to depict two cranes and three young amid flowers, leaves, and grass against a nashiji ground, the ita (baseboard) similarly decorated with leaves and fitted with an openworked tray holding two inscribed fude (writing brushes), a rectangular suzuri (inkstone), and a gilt-copper suiteki (waterdropper) in the form of a ho-o bird. The edges of gold fundame, the exterior sides and base of roiro. SIZE 5 x 26 x 23.7 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear, the cover with expected age cracks with associated old repairs, few minuscule chips and tiny nicks.
