Teng, Taipei, no.003107 (label)漢 雙獸鈕黛硯 及盒傳承:臺北慎德堂,編號003107(標簽)This type of inkstones are usually of long and thin slab, made of stone. It is used by women to grind a mineral calleddai for eyebrow makeup during the Han dynasty, hence it is often calleddai yan, meaning, inkstone fordai. In early Han dynasty, inkstones for writing and for makeup function similarly, however differ in terms of their target gro: one for scholars and officials, and the other, women. As a result inkstone for writing are usually larger than that for eyebrow makeup.pare with similar ink-slabs, see the collections of Luoyang Jinshi Wenzi Museum, on their homepage.
