It is used by women to grind a mineral calleddai for eyebrow makeup during the Han dynasty, hence it is often calleddai yan, meaning, inkstone fordai. In early Han dynasty, inkstones for writing and for makeup function similarly, however differ in terms of their target gro: one for scholars and officials, and the other, women.
