Seated on a tiger skin draped above a cushioned throne, a second tiger skin over his shoulders, further wearing loose-fitting robes and a white cap covering his flaming hair, the wild face with a wrathful expression marked by bulging eyes, sharp fangs, and a pig-like snout, surrounded by images of teachers and monks as well as a mule-headed deity amid swirling clouds.Provenance: Acquired by the father of the present owners around 1970 and thence by descent. Condition: Good condition with some wear, creasing, abrasions, minor losses, possibly minor touchups.Dimensions: 164 x 128 cmExpert’s note: Dr. David Templeman, a scholar of Tibetan Buddhism and Adjunct Research Fellow at Monash Asia Institute, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, has previously appraised the present lot and according to him, the thangka depicts a local village deity from Rebgong, which is the Tibetan name of the city of Tongren in the autonomous prefecture of Huangnan, Qinghai, China. Rebgong has a number of Tibetan Buddhist temples and gompas, including the large and significant Rongwo Monastery of the Gelug school. It is known as a center of thangka painting.
