TWO TURQUOISE-GROUND CLOISONNÉ WALL VASES Double-gourd wall vase 18th/early 19th century; Bottle-form wall vase 19th century (2)PROPERTY OF ANOTHER OWNERTWO TURQUOISE-GROUND CLOISONNÉ WALL VASESDouble-gourd wall vase: 18th/early 19th century; Bottle-form wall vase: 19th centuryComprising a double-gourd wall vase with an applied gilt-metal 'ribbon' encircling the waist and issuing loops and fluttering ends along the sides, the principal side of the vase centered with 'Da Ji' ('great auspiciousness') surrounded by fruiting and flowering double-gourd vines in a host of colors against a turquoise ground, a blue-enameled bat wrapping its wings around the rim, the reverse comprised of a gilt-metal sheet worked in repoussé with lotus scroll and a stippled ground, an inverted T-shaped aperture for suspension; and a bottle-form wall vase dominated by richly colored blossoming lotus scroll against a turquoise ground all between lappet bands at the shoulder and lower body, the neck with upright leaves divided by pendent floral scroll and flanked by applied openwork gilt-metal scrolling chilong handles, the waisted foot positioned atop a gilt-metal demilune stand with ruyi-head feet, the reverse formed from a sheet of metal cut with coin-shaped apertures. 9 3/8in (23.8cm); 10in (25.4cm) high (2).Provenance:Sara Fredericks (1903-1986), likely acquired in the 1960s in New York, thence by descentThe present wall vases display the ornate aesthetic and technical mastery that characterizes cloisonné wares of the High Qing period. The double-gourd vase is particularly fine in the vibrant tones achieved in its enamel and the elegant execution of the linework of the cloisons. This vase shares visual and thematic relationships to a pair of Qianlong period cloisonné double-gourd 'Da Ji' wall vases sold at Sotheby's, New York, 11 September 2019, lot 824; and a Qianlong period cloisonné flattened double-gourd 'Da Ji' vase from the collection of Roger Keverne sold in our London rooms, 7 June 2021, lot 695. The botte vase utilizes the classic 'scrolling lotus' motif first seen on cloisonné wares of the Ming dynasty, and reinterprets it in a 19th century visual language and palette, set off by elaborate openwork gilt handles. Sara Fredericks (1903-1986) was a socialite and premier retailer who specialized in luxury women's apparel. She was friends with top fashion designers including James Galanos, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, and Hubert de Givenchy, and her company, Sara Fredericks Salon Shops, carried clothes by these designers as well as by Chanel, Chloe, and other iconic brands. The company had locations in Miami, Palm Beach, Sarasota, New York City, and Boston.
