Typically, the view is one of the Praya Grande which is situated beyond the hills illustrated. In the foreground are several large ships from Europe, United States, England, and Portugal. The fort and church on the hilltops are flying Portuguese flags. The steam-driven ships in the harbor indicate the relatively later date of this painting.
