The large flaming scroll along the exterior of the basin suggests that this object was used in fire-offering rituals relating to the Hindu fire god Agni. Tibetan fire rituals were used as a swift conduit between the worshipper and deity, with smoke acting as a means of purifying the obstructions to one's spiritual path.
