Large Italian 19 Century Grand Tour Bronze Silenus (Wine God Companion) Lamp after the original excavated in Pompeii; on raised base with coiled snake at top; now with metal tube along side and ending in a light fixture. Height 23 1/4 inches (59 cm.). NOTE: The original statue was found in Pompeii on May 2 1864 and has since been in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The statue was a favorite of travelers on the Grand Tour in Italy and copies in various sizes were made in local bronze foundries of the period.
