A FAMILLE ROSE 'EUROPEAN-SUBJECT' PART TEA SERVICE Qianlong period, circa 1760 Comprising teapot and cover, tea caddy and cover, sugar bowl and cover, small coffee pot and cover, slop bowl, and small oval stand, each delicately enameled after an unidentified European print source with figure in elegant outdoor 'fetes champetres', the vessels painted with a different scene to each side, one with an embracing courting European couple seated on rockwork on a grassy hillock, with a lone clown-like figure standing behind them and an urn on a column near trees to the other, the reverse side depicting another similar garden scene with a standing couple in conversation with a seated lady, both scenes bordered above by a swag design of delicate roses, the small tray with the former scene only. the teapot in ( cm) across (6). Footnotes: 乾隆時期 約1760年 粉彩《歐洲人物》茶具同組六件 Although the exact source of this attractive design has not been positively identified, the style of clothing, elegance of the tall figures, and general air of cosmopolitan figures behaving slightly badly in the open air, all suggest an origin in prints copying the amusing, bucolic, fanciful garden scenes of mock-rustic figures painted in in the style of the French artists Watteau, Lancret and Boucher, whose 'fetes champetre' oil paintings represent the quintessence of rococo frivolity and were widely reproduced as engravings.
