AN ATTRACTIVE FAMILLE ROSE 'MEISSEN STYLE' OVAL TUREEN, COVER AND STAND Qianlong period, circa 1760 The tureen body, domed cover with pierced crown finial, and deep stand all brightly enameled principally in pink with loose scattered floral sprays and single flowerheads within a densely patterned border, the sides of the tureen base applied with European-figure heads issuing tall iron-red plumes forming the handles. the stand: 15in (38cm) wide Footnotes: 乾隆時期 約1760年 粉彩《麥森風格》橢圓帶蓋湯盆及托盤 The unusual handles and coronet finial loosely copy similar ones (originally probably silver or bronze) found on 18th century European porcelain. The porcelain wares of this type being made in Western kilns are often of very high quality. This clearly reflects the fact that they are being commissioned in many cases as parts of extensive table services for top-level government officials or as ambassadorial gifts, at factories often largely or entirely funded by European monarchs and Electors as a 'vanity venture' to project the cultural credentials of the ruling family. This explains why many are table wares, made initially at the Meissen factory in the 1720s, and widely copied elsewhere thereafter. Perhaps the most glamorous and elaborate of all such table services made using sculptural elements entirely alien to the traditional skills of the artisan potter, is the famous 'Swan Service, commissioned in 1736 by Count Heinrich Graf von Brühl, Prime Minister to Augustus II of Saxony, and director of the Meissen manufactory in Dresden.
