The scenes are undoubtedly derived from specific European prints in the first instance but have been recopied many times. Although the precise source cannot always be found, the general arrangement is very consistent, basically comprising scenes of 'the Meet', 'the Chase' and 'the Kill'. The source of the English hunting engravings may ultimately be Thomas Burford (1710-1774) after James Seymour (1702-1752). The ship depicted on the interior of this rare bowl is a very unusual maritime feature, as almost always a hunting bowl's interior scene also depicts a further aspect of the hunt.
