A PAIR OF LARGE GUANGZHOU (CANTON) ENAMEL 'EUROPEAN-SUBJECT' CIRCULAR DISHES Qianlong period, circa 1740-1760 one painted to a central roundel and depicting two elegant Western ladies and a gentleman in seventeenth-century dress standing on a terrace and being offered flowers and fruit by three small boys with curly hair in European attire, the other with two western figures, one standing, one seated, with two younger attendants, one bowing before them, the first scene set on a fenced terrace in a lake landscape with Western buildings including a church steeple, the second set in a mountainous lake landscape with plainly-articulated western buildings to one side, both central roundels with a dense cell ground at the cavetto with five equally spaced ogival panels with mythical animals below a gilt metal rim, both dishes brilliantly painted to the reverse sides in a Chinese idiom with a group of composite flowers with butterflies to the base and with a similar dense cell pattern ground with five equally spaced ogival panels of further well-defined flower groups to the rounded exterior sides. 13 3/8in (33.8cm) diam (2).
