A 'SWEDISH BANKNOTE' PUNCH BOWL AND STAND Qianlong period, circa 1765-70 Decorated with two Swedish bank notes dated 1762 and 1768. The 1768 note is on the interior of the bowl in ink color (grisaille) copying the original black printing of the note while the impressed designs from the note are replicated in bianco sopra bianco (white enamel on white porcelain); the 1762 note decorates the stand; the exterior of the bowl is decorated with flowers; the interior rim of the bowl and the rim of the stand are decorated with a continuous fishtail border in ink color and gilding. The bowl: 12 1/2in (32cm) diam; the stand 14 3/4in (37cm) diam (2). Bowls with accompanying stands like this are rare and seem to have been a particular feature for the Swedish market. Similar saucers and bowls are known from 1759, 1762 and 1775 with other banknotes depicted all for the Swedish market. The note on the stand is dated 1762 and inscribed to Jacob Hahr (1727-85) a supercargo of the Swedish East India Company on the ships Prins Friederic Adolph and Riksens Stander. At the top right of each note is a cartouche with the device of the bank of Sweden with the motto hinc robur et securitas and to the left is another device stating, 'Bank Bill of the Estates of the Realm of Sweden'. (fig. 1) These imitate the watermarks or impressed stamps on the original bills. The note on the bowl is dated 1768. Both notes carry a written warning in a small script that translates as 'He who counterfeited this bill shall be hanged by his neck, but to him who provably detecteth the counterfeiter shall be given a reward of forty thousand dollars in copper coins in accordance with his majesty's gracious pleasure of the 20 December 1754.
