A PAIR OF HERALDIC TRUMPET BANNERS Early 20th century (1901-1910), British (2)THE SELECTED CONTENTS OF MELDON PARKA PAIR OF HERALDIC TRUMPET BANNERSEarly 20th century (1901-1910), BritishDesigned with the royal coat of arms, worked in plied gold and silver thread on a red silk ground, mounted in glazed rosewood frames, having silver fringe to the lower end and either side, in simulated tortoiseshell glazed frames, with handwritten label to reverse 'FIRST LIFE GUARDS TRUMPET BANNER,' PB COOKSON 1904, the banners, 45cm x 54cm, the frames overall 63cm x 75cm (2)These are the arms of the reigning King or Queen of the United Kingdom. They were first adopted by George III (1760-1820) after the Act of Union with Ireland in 1800. He, as did later 19th century monarchs, including Queen Victoria (1837-1901), use the arms with a central escutcheon. In the case of the Hanoverian Kings the arms were used with a central escutcheon that was charged with the arms of the Hanoverian estate. Queen Victoria's arms included, after her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840, an escutcheon with arms for Saxe-Coburg. We must therefore turn our attention to the twentieth century, during which all monarchs used the arms here. The inclusion of the cypher of the reigning monarch as ER would appear to indicate that the arms are for Edward VII (1901-1910).With thanks to Roger Whitworth for his guidance with this Lot.
