A fine set of unusual crescent shaped Copeland Spode small side salad or bone plates in a pattern known as 'Portland Vase.. Border is transfer printed in a striking deep blue with the central Portland Vase motif and inner scroll border and flowers in the vase picked out with hand coloured enamels in shades of purple, lavender, yellow and green. Intricately done. The remarkable design of the border is truly 3 dimensional and demanded great skill if unsightly joins were to be avoided. The dishes measure 8 ¼’’ x 4’’ (21cm x 10cm). In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration, signs of wear or crazing. This ‘Portland Vase' pattern, not to be confused with the later, less colourful ‘Spode Blue Room’, dates to 1914-1920. Except for one dish which shows only the ‘Copeland’ impression, this set is fully stamped on the base with the makers stamp ‘Copeland late Spode’’/Portland Vase No. 637851?) and the Copeland impressed makers mark of Copeland over a crown. These small dishes would add a beautiful accent to an existing collection of blue and white tableware.
