This set is a delight to look at. The molded flowers and leaves are very delicate and some are freestanding, fully three-dimensional. The thin branch-form handle on the lid seems to invite you to pick it up and look inside. It has the feel of a much larger piece, but in fact the stand is only seven and a half inches long. It almost seems like a tureen from a child’s service. Godden explains in his book on Lowestoft that they made very close copies of Worcester butter tureens and also copied Worcester’s blue crescent mark. He notes that six-petaled flowers, as on this tub, are a sign that the piece is by Lowestoft. Caughley also made a close imitation, but copied Worcester’s five-petaled flowers. Plate 99 in Lowestoft Porcelain illustrates the Lowestoft version, identical to this. The condition is great. The tub is perfect with no damage. The lid is missing one petal from a flower. The stand has a chip to the end of one petal—about one-quarter of the petal is gone—and one of the leaves is half gone but the edge is glazed, so that happened in the firing. The back has the label of Earle Vandekar, the noted antiques dealer. You won’t find a better one.
