Bala YawaFive small dishes Three of the five dishes bear the stamp 'BALA' (to the base of the work); the remaining two do not bear a stamp. stoneware All measuring approximately 3.5 x 17.5 x 13cm (1 3/8 x 6 7/8 x 5 1/8in). the tallest measuring 3.9 x 16.9 x 13cm (1 9/16 x 6 5/8 x 5 1/8in). the shortest 3.4 x 16.7 x 12cm (1 5/16 x 6 9/16 x 4 3/4in). (5) Provenance Acquired directly from the Abuja Pottery Training Centre; A private collection. With three of the five near identical small dishes bearing the stamp associated with Bala Yawa, it is possible that the remaining two could have been made by the same hand. Understood to be wheel thrown prior to the addition on a handle to each work, the purpose of the creation of these works could be classed with an emphasis on form. With no incisions or decoration to the work beyond their functional attributes, the present lot is a display of the tasking exercise of duplication in hand made works.
