AN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS 'TWO LADIES' SNUFF BOTTLE Liu Shouben, 1994PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF KIM GREENAN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS 'TWO LADIES' SNUFF BOTTLELiu Shouben, 1994Of elongated, rectangular form with shoulders sloping to a cylindrical neck with flat lip and standing on a carved oval footrim, the interior of the bottle very well painted in ink and watercolors with two opposing portraits of Xiang Fei (The Fragrant Consort), one side with a European pastoral scene, depicting Xiang Fei wearing a straw hat, seated on a rock under a willow tree, her staff leaning against her and a basket of flowers by her side, the reverse painted with Xiang Fei in 'court attire', her hands holding a soft cloth bag, an inscription to one side, dated jiaxu qiuri (autumn of 1994), signed Liu Shouben with one real seal. 2 1/2in (6.3cm) high甲戌 (1994) 劉守本 玻璃内畫香妃像鼻煙壺一件《劉守本》款Provenance:Acquired October 2009 Kim Green collection no. 126Liu Shouben (1942-2022) was one of the four inside-painted artists, along with Wang Xisan, Ye Shuyin and Ding Guiling, who was taught the art by two of the sons of Ye Zhongsan: Ye Xiaofeng and Ye Bengqi. In 1984 Liu was honored as a 'Beijing Arts and Crafts Master' and it was through him that the Beijing School of inside-painting has flourished.
