During his career Rechem wasCanonofSt Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, and president of theMajor Seminary of Ghent. He gained fame as General Superior of theSisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary (1903-1943) and established missions in the Belgian Congo. He was consecrated as a bishop in 1914 byAntoon Stillemans. This Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary was founded in Belgium on November 4, 1803 by Canon Pierre-Joseph Triest in Lovendegem, in the diocese of Ghent.
