除了为人熟知的文房四宝，文人的书房里还有“第五宝”──水盂。“晨起则磨墨汁，汁盈砚池，以供一日之用，墨尽复磨，故有水盂。”宋人赵希鹄在《沿天清录集》中对水盂作了如上注释。水盂，又名水丞。盂，原意为一种盛饭的器皿，呈圆形，敞口，不甚深。盂应为“饮器也”，即盛水以饮的器皿清人段玉裁如是认为。而大概在汉魏时期，绘画书法艺术空前繁盛，盂不再只是盛饭的器皿，文人们开始将盂作为文人书案盛水的用具，即水盂，此后历朝袭用。水盂小巧而雅致，富有情趣，是书房中的贮水小罐，为砚添水用。没了它，无法磨砚，更别提挥毫。若用碗碟替代，那意境一下子就毁了一半。一个文雅的书房，养清雅淡泊之气，都不能缺少了它。
