张大千所绘人物画中，观世音菩萨像一直是其所钟情的一个题材，一般分水墨淡彩写意画和工笔重彩二种。水墨淡彩写意类，画中观音作者采用写意法，先以水墨淡彩勾出轮廓，然后以稍浓的墨在上面再勾勒一下，线条柔而有弹性，显得极为生动。流动的涡纹和空白相呼应，画面处于静中有动的气氛。观音着白纱素净大气，坐姿庄重，面部娴静仁慈，柳叶眉，眼睛似在俯瞰众生，清净悲悯的气息弥漫开来。这幅画说明张大千进行佛教题材的创作活动，并不是赴敦煌之后才有的，至少在此之前，佛性慈悲的观音题材已被他驾轻就熟地不断表现。
