Marcus Ezekiel was born in Bombay in 1854, and was employed in Shanghai by E.D.Sassoon & Co, and later became director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Marcus formed an extensive collection of Chinese art, mostly ceramics, but his son Victor would collect mostly jade and hardstone carvings. Victor Ezekiel was much involved with the Oriental Ceramic Society, serving as a Council Member from 1965 to 1970.
