A MARBLE-INSET HONGMU STAND 19th centuryA MARBLE-INSET HONGMU STAND19th centuryThe stand with a circular top inset with a pink marble panel, supported on a reticulated apron and five legs intricately carved as rootwood, all connected by stretchers at the upturned feet. 80cm (31 1/2in) high x 44.5cm (17 1/2in) diam.十九世紀 紅木嵌雲石圓幾The wood making up the present stand mimics the rootwood, which became a popular means to construct furniture for the scholar's studio during the Ming dynasty. The use of rootwood reflected the sophisticated taste for natural forms. By the Qing dynasty, the Imperial household had appropriated some of the literati traditions, including furnishing certain halls in the palace in the manner of a scholar's studio. In this context, however, rootwood furniture was carefully constructed over a sturdy hardwood frame to allow for more traditional furniture forms, such as altar tables, stands and stools. For examples of rootwood furniture made in the literati-style see The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum.
