A RARE PAINTED LACQUER 'BASKETWEAVE' TRAY16th/17th centuryOf octagonal form with straight sides raised on a flat base, the side intricately decorated with eight 'basketweave' panels, painted with reddish-brown and red lacquer, Japanese wood box.25.6cm (10 1/8in) longProvenance: Provenance:Purchased in Japan in the 2000s來源:約2000年購自日本Only a few surviving examples of utensils datable to late Ming and early Qing like trays for incense and tea ceremonies have survived since they were more often made in indigenous perishable softwoods. The present lot was made in lacquer which makes it less perishable, see a huanghuali octagonal tray of the late Ming period, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, previously in the Dr S.Y. Yip collection, 5 April 2017, lot 3509.
