Embossed, chiselled and engraved with leaf motifs, peacock feathers and gadroons, two oval reserves with horses and hunting scenes on the body, intertwined snakes shaped handles. Stamped Pickett & Rundell fecit on the foot's inside rim. Marked on the foot and on the cover's rim. 4404 g 19.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 in. The renewed interest in the ancient world made the lidded vase one of the most distinctive symbols of the neoclassical style and the most fashionable works of art at the end of the 18th Century, with the silver-gilt variant at the top end of the market. The partner between Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp lasted from 1763 to 1788, and during this period they supplied silverware of great artistic value to the best English clientele. Among the most beautiful and still most desired objects of their production there are a series of magnificent trophies, the so-called Richmond C, one of which was designed by Robert Adam. These c have decorations inspired by the world of horse racing, as in the present example. For the design of the medallions, pare Adam's 1764 cup owned by the National Trust and kept at Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire, while for the handles, see the 1772 Wells Cup in the collections of the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
