Sets of bowls with this subject matter were first created in the Jiaqing period (1796-1820) and continued in the Daoguang period (1820-1850), with many bearing the respective imperial marks. The present set represents a revival of the form in the Republic period (1912-1949). One of these bowls is painted with the Pavilion of Prince Teng, which is along the Gan river in Xinjian county, and was described in a poem by Wang Bo (649-676). The image on the other bowl represents Donghu shuyuan (East Lake College) which sat on Baihua Island in the city of Nanchang. The island was home to a famous garden designed in the Song dynasty (960-1379).
