砚作为文房四宝之一，具有悠久的历史。青瓷砚随着青瓷的烧制成功开始出现，继唐、元、明，清一直都有沿用。明清时期，随着景德镇瓷器的鼎盛发展，瓷砚也一改以往的粗胎质地，成为文人书案上的常备之物。辟雍砚的主要特点是砚池围绕砚堂一周，如辟雍环水。南北朝、隋、唐的陶瓷工匠们，模仿辟雍设计出的辟雍砚，是极富观赏价值的艺术珍品和实用文具。此方辟雍砚亦如其形，大致呈圆饼状，裸胎，砚堂内凹，环池，扁鼓腹，壁挂釉。配有原盒，盒盖刻竹虫图。
