作为文房四宝，砚为其中之一。此砚采用紫砂胎制成，质地细腻娇嫩，包浆浑厚，保存完整。整个砚台由砚盖和砚堂两部分组成，整体形状作椭圆形，色泽红艳。砚面平整，口沿设有月牙形小槽，边际刻有“仿汉末央，海天初月砚”。砚背平整，题有诗文刻“天初月升于水，素华朗照清莫比。侯之砖曾无此，谁与题名艰议拟。翰筵静用实佳矣，抽思启秘有若是”并落款乾隆御铭，并钤“乾”“隆”方圆印。清代御题诗作颇多，乾隆帝又喜好风雅，故此朝文物更多，然如集御题诗与上等砚材二美并具者则为少见。挥毫泼墨以此为伴殊为有趣，为书房精品，当可珍视之。
