直颈瓶因其造型典雅大气、线条柔美俊秀，深得清朝历代君王的喜爱。乾隆后每朝相袭，名称、器型及用途从末改变。初期直颈瓶青花纹饰有定样，颈部青花蕉叶纹，腹部缠枝莲纹，取其“清廉”之意。以后出现粉彩直颈瓶，纹饰始有变化，百蝶、云蝠、福桃、龙凤、八宝等纹饰。同治以后又有蓝釉金彩皮球花。
