霁蓝釉是元代景德镇开始创烧的，它一反青花瓷白底蓝花的做法，除了在剔刻火珠云龙的地方施白釉外，通体施蓝釉。这种蓝釉是珍贵的进口青料——苏泥勃青掺入石灰碱釉中，在1280--1300的高温中一次烧造而成。霁蓝釉的烧造对温度要求极高，温度太高会流釉，温度太低则发色灰暗，成品率极低，加上进口青料极其昂贵，因此霁蓝釉只能为官窑所垄断，专门用于祭天，又称“祭蓝”。
