抱月瓶，顾名思义其器型犹如一轮明月悬挂空中。在当时烧制难度极大，宽阔的瓶身要立在细小的足部上面，整个器身不歪斜，是极为困难的一件事情。整件抱月瓶的纹饰由斗彩的装饰技法完成的，斗彩是一种结合了釉下青花，以及釉上彩的装饰工艺，要在瓷胎上面先用青花绘出轮廓，浇上透明釉，入窑高温烧造，出窑后再填入釉上彩，再以低温烧造一次，因此其烧制相当繁复。
